Larnaca continues to actively upgrade its storm water system in case of potential flooding

On Tuesday 21 October, Larnaca Municipality signed a contract with IMATECH KOUNNA LIMITED for the installation of a new storm water drainage system in the Aradippou area.

Under the terms of the contract, the works will cover a stretch of approximately 5 kilometres. In addition to the installation of the storm water system, the area will be completely landscaped. There will be new pedestrian and cycle paths and modern road equipment. According to the mayor, the cost of the project is estimated at around €4 million, of which €3 million will be provided by the Restoration Fund and the remaining €1 million by the municipality. The contract will run for 15 months. The work is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025.

It is worth noting that the issue of upgrading the flood control channels in the Larnaca area has been raised several times. The fact is that the city is often flooded during the winter rains. But soon this problem will finally be solved.

Larnaca is one of the cities in the world where the sun shines 300 days a year. However, the rare storms that hit the city during the winter months cause a lot of inconvenience to the locals.

The lack of an effective storm water drainage system is the main cause of constant flooding in Larnaca. Recognising the need to address the root cause of the constant flooding, the local town hall launched a flood mitigation project in June 2023. Since the launch of the programme, three tenders have been launched. Two have been successfully completed.
